About Sarasota County Facts

Sarasota County Facts is a project of Local Government Accountability (LGAI), an independent Wyoming 501(c)(4) forensic research organization that investigates how local governments manage public money. We investigate how local governments manage public money by examining budgets, audits, debt, contracts, compensation, and tax policy. All findings are drawn from primary public records and presented in a clear, verifiable format.

Our Approach

We begin every investigation open-minded, apply a consistent multi-lens method (peer comps, trends, spending patterns, board minutes, contracts, donor cross-checks), and let the public record decide. As a 501(c)(4), LGAI exercises the full range of First Amendment rights available under the law. We have made no endorsement of any candidate to date and expressly reserve the right — strictly on the fiscal record and in our sole discretion — to communicate with candidates and campaigns, to endorse candidates, to state clearer positions, or to take any further lawful action when the facts warrant. We raise awareness so citizens can make informed decisions.

This site focuses on Sarasota County. While the full Board of County Commissioners shares responsibility for budget and spending decisions, Commissioners Joe Neunder (District 4) and Mark Smith (District 2) are the only two members currently up for re-election. Both have voted in favor of the major spending increases and debt growth of the past three years. Their records are documented here so voters can make informed choices in the upcoming election.
